Staying Ahead of the SAD Curve

Here we are, creeping steadily closer to the shortest day of the year, the Winter Solstice on December 21st, the official start of winter.  If you've managed to reset your daily routine (and that of your kids and pets) after the recent time change, you're doing pretty well.  But what if you aren't?  Well, there's a logical reason--and it's not just the start of the Christmas commercials on TV and the Christmas decor popping up in local stores.

Seasonal Affective Disorder , or SAD, is an illness affecting many Americans. Approximately  half the time, d epression is associated with SAD. According to Psychology Today, "Seasonal affective disorder is estimated to affect 10 million Americans. Another 10 percent to 20 percent may have mild SAD...many people with SAD report at least one close relative with a psychiatric disorder, most frequently a severe depressive disorder (55 percent) or alcohol abuse (34 percent).” 21st, the official start of winter.

In the Shadow of Greatness

It is a rare privilege to live in the age of giants whose discoveries change forever the direction of your specialty field.  It is even a greater privilege to be educated by these great minds.  I had the privilege and honor of learning from Dr. B.F. Skinner in the early 70s as he changed my direction to behaviorism which I have practiced for the last 50 years.  In a similar way, Dr. Tony Barker, the inventor of transcranial magnetic stimulation, has changed the course of psychiatry by introducing it to neuromodulation, and in doing so, has certainly changed my focus over the last number of years.

World Health Day: April 17, 2017

April 17th is World Health Day --  This year the World Health Organization is highlighting Depression -- with the goal of inviting and encouraging people into better health.

 

According to the World Heath Organization:

  • Depression is a common mental disorder.
  • Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression.
  • Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.
  • More women are affected by depression than men.
  • At its worst, depression can lead to suicide.
  • There are effective treatments for depression.
