May Is Mental Health Month — Start By Curing The Stigma!

In 1949 Mental Health America named the month of May Mental Health Month or Mental Health Awareness Month. This year the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is taking a different approach to the illness and how it is perceived by the public, with the theme of “”CureStigma”” Look for awareness events all during the month.

The CureStigma ??ampaign Manifesto””:

  • There?? a virus spreading across America.
  • It harms the 1-in-5 Americans affected by mental health conditions.
  • It shames them into silence.
  • It prevents them from seeking help.
  • In some cases, it takes lives.

??hat virus are we talking about? It?? stigma. Stigma against people with mental health conditions. But there?? good news. Stigma is 100% curable. Compassion, empathy, and understanding are the antidotes. Your voice can spread the cure. Join NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Together we can #CureStigma.??/em>

According to a recent article in Men?? Health entitled, ??ot Talking About Mental Health Is Literally Killing Men?? Author Sean Evans says,

??our mental health is inseparable from your physical health. Not a revolutionary concept, but what is astounding is the stigmatization that still surrounds men who dare to talk about their mental struggles. As we move into Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we hope to change that.??span style=””background-color: transparent;””>

Here are some more stats from Evan?? article:

  • 9 percent of men experience depression on a daily basis.
  • That?? more than 6 million men.
  • Even if we understand what depression feels like, we rarely admit that?? the culprit.
  • We lie and say we??e tired or just cranky.
  • More than 3 million men struggle with anxiety daily.
  • Of the 3.5 million people diagnosed as schizophrenic by the age of 30.
  • More than 90 percent are men.
  • An estimated 10 million men in the U.S. will suffer from an eating disorder in their lifetime.
  • We retreat from friends and instead drown sorrows in numbing substances.
  • One out of every five men will develop an alcohol dependency during his life.

To make matters worse, according to Evans, ??ale suicide is rising at such an alarming rate that it?? been classified as a ??ilent epidemic.??It?? the seventh leading cause of death for males. That?? a staggering statistic. Drill down into the numbers and suicide is the second most common cause of death for every age group for men 10 through 39.
